8 tips for long, strong, gorgeous hair

8 December 2021

Have you been dreaming of long, strong and above all healthy hair? Then I have good news for you! By following the following tips, the results will be there sooner than you dreamed.

TIP 1: Make your hair healthy while you sleep

We understand: when you have long hair, it is comfortable to tie it up before going to bed. But sleeping with your hair in a ponytail can cause hair loss. This can cause your hair to become considerably thinner. When your hair is tied back tightly it causes tension on your scalp. That is why it is better to sleep with loose hair or to sleep with a loose braid in your hair.

Also, sleeping on a satin pillowcase creates less friction and protects your hair more, so it is much less likely to break. A cotton pillowcase absorbs your hair's natural oils, making your hair look dry. Another solution is to place a satin scarf on your pillowcase. It does the same job as a silk pillowcase.

TIP 2: Find a shampoo that suits you

The basics are the most important. Start by using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. Try to avoid shampoos containing sulphates, parabens and silicones as they cleanse the hair too aggressively and make hair drier.

Dry or frizzy hair? Then try skipping a shampooing session and only washing your hair with conditioner. Shampoo dries out your hair. Do you want to use shampoo? Apply it especially to the roots of your hair and let your conditioner work in for a long time afterwards.

Damaged hair? Then go for a shampoo with a mild cleansing, nourishing oils, such as olive oil, coconut oil, argan oil and almond oil. Vitamins, fatty acids and minerals will do your hair good. Try to avoid mineral oils! These will dry out your scalp.

TIP 3: Do not spray perfume into your hair

Oh yes, we all do it. Quickly spray some perfume all over (including your hair) before we step out the door. And yet, this is not such a good idea to do. Let me tell you why! Perfume contains alcohol that dries out your hair. Hair perfume is therefore the solution. It is specially developed for use in the hair and contains no alcohol. It protects and moisturises your hair.

TIP 4: Avoid direct heat

Washing your hair with hot water dries out your hair and makes it brittle and prone to breakage. Lukewarm water will help you to retain moisture naturally. So try to wash your hair with as cold water as possible.

Heat tools are also enormously damaging to your hair. Think of a hair dryer, a straightening iron or a curling iron. If you want to use one of these tools, be sure to use a head protector when using it. A head protector is a spray that protects your hair against heat tools. Apply it before drying, straightening or curling your hair. Also, set the tool on a slightly cooler setting if possible.

TIP 5: Find the right hairbrush

Avoid breaking your hair when brushing. Always start brushing your hair from the ends to the roots. This ensures less tangling. Any comb with wide teeth is suitable. Do not brush your hair when it is still wet. This is when your hair is most fragile. Be nice to your hair!

Go for a detangler brush, which is designed to easily remove tangles from your hair. The teeth of the brush are widely spaced so that they do not pull at your hair. These types of hair combs usually do not have handles so that you can apply much more controlled pressure to the brush itself.

TIP 6: Pamper your scalp

Massage your scalp with your fingers for better circulation.

Do this for 5 - 15 minutes. This way the hair follicles receive the nutrients they need for healthy and faster hair growth. A regular head massage or a derma roller are your best friends. Use lavender oil when massaging. This would stimulate hair growth even better.

  • Before washing your hair, apply oil. The oil forms a kind of barrier between your scalp and the shampoo. The oil will protect the scalp from drying out of the shampoo.
    • Use a scrub every now and then! Hair leftovers are often left behind in the hair; think of hairspray, dry shampoo,... These leftovers clog up our scalp, preventing it from breathing properly. Using a scrub loosens these residues and makes it easier for new hairs to grow.
    • Take care of your hair with a hair mask at least once a week. Your hair will be silky and shiny afterwards.

TIP 7: Nourish your hair from the inside out

Healthy nutrition is the key to healthier hair. Eat ingredients that are good for your hair. To make sure that your hair is sufficiently nourished, choose food with healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. There are also supplements with certain nutrients that can make a big difference. Think of biotin, collagen and/or a vitamin complex.

To improve the quality of your hair, you should eat a lot of protein-rich food. You need this substance in order for it to be converted into keratin. Iron and zinc can also help you produce keratin. Make sure you take in enough antioxidants. They help to strengthen your hair. Read on for some examples of foods that are good for your hair:

Oily fish: Salmon contains omega fatty acids, vitamin B-12 and iron.

Green vegetables: Spinach, broccoli and chard are packed with vitamins and make a lot of sebum.

Beans: Kidney beans and lentils stimulate hair growth on the one hand but also combat baldness and ageing on the other. This is because they contain zinc, iron and biotin.

Nuts: Cashews, pecans and almonds take care of your scalp and make your hair stronger. They also make your hair fitter.

Poultry: Eating chicken and turkey is very important to keep your protein intake up. It prevents hair loss. If you are protein deficient, your hair is likely to become weak and brittle. It can also cause your hair to lose its colour.

Eggs contain biotin, protein and vitamin B-12. These substances prevent hair loss. They make your hair shiny and thicker.

Low-fat dairy products: Skimmed milk and yoghurt are full of calcium and protein. Calcium ensures that your hair is strong, does not break down as easily and therefore grows faster.

Carrots contain vitamin A. It keeps your scalp healthy.

TIP 8: Take time to relax

    Avoid stress

Stress increases the adrenalin in the body and can therefore cause more hair loss. Take a break now and then, especially in busy periods.

    Sleep out

An additional benefit of enough sleep is that your hair becomes healthier and stronger. Hair loss, damaged hair and reduced hair growth are all consequences of sleep deprivation. So take a hot shower to trigger melatonin, take good care of your hair while washing it with the tips above and... Sleep well!

Try out some of these tips and, above all, be patient. You will see that before you know it, your hair will be longer, healthier and stronger than ever before!
